Off the Beaten Path: Hidden Gems in Europe

It’s easy to understand the pull of crowd favourites like Paris, Venice and Santorini - they’re popular for a reason. But when you follow the well-worn path, your experience often ends up feeling just like everyone else’s. The magic lies in choosing places that echo the atmosphere of these iconic spots, but with fewer crowds, more authenticity and stories that are entirely your own.

These are my favourite hidden gems in Europe that deliver familiar charm with a twist. They feel personal, surprising and beautifully different, with exceptional accommodation to match.

1. The Venice of the Alps: Annecy, France

Annecy earns its nickname from its intricate canals and colourful facades, all framed by a pristine lake and Alpine peaks. It shares Venice’s beauty, but with a calmer pace and an undeniable mountain-town warmth. Here, life moves gently - and that's exactly the point.

📍 Stay at: Les Trésoms Lake & Spa Resort

This four-star property overlooks Lake Annecy and offers elegant rooms, a full spa and Michelin-starred dining at La Rotonde des Trésoms. The view from the terrace alone is reason to stay three nights.

Travel tip: Visit mid-week to avoid the weekend crowds. It’s easier to get into top restaurants, and you’ll see the town at its most peaceful.

2. The Fairytale Lake: Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled delivers Alpine charm with a storybook setting - an island church floating on still emerald waters, framed by castle-topped cliffs. It offers the romance of central Europe, without the rush of its more famous neighbours.

📍 Stay at: Grand Hotel Toplice

Overlooking the lake, this hotel offers timeless charm with access to thermal springs, classic interiors, and lakeside dining. Their private beach area adds a layer of exclusivity.

Travel tip: Rent a wooden rowboat rather than taking the public ferry to Bled Island. It’s quiet, peaceful and more personal.

3. Wild Luxury in the Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Lofoten Islands are often called Norway’s most dramatic corner, where towering peaks dive into the sea and tiny fishing cabins dot the shore. You get all the rugged Nordic beauty, without the queues and scheduled bustle of cruise ports. It’s remote, raw and unforgettable.

📍 Stay at: Nusfjord Village & Resort

Set in a UNESCO-listed fishing village, the resort blends heritage with contemporary luxury. Red rorbu cabins, an oceanfront sauna and Arctic cuisine round out the experience.

Travel tip: Stay at least three nights to catch a mix of weather, light and moods. The islands change character by the hour.

4. Europe’s Secret Coastline: Albania’s Riviera

The Albanian Riviera has the sparkling seas of Greece and the hilltop charm of Italy, and it’s a wonder more travellers haven’t caught on to it yet. Think stone villages, cliffside drives and untouched beaches - this is where Mediterranean life still feels truly local.

📍 Stay at: The Miamar Hotel, Himarë

This sleek property features a striking infinity pool, refined interiors and direct beach access. A modern contrast to the rustic charm of the region, but still deeply connected to its surroundings.

Travel tip: Drive the coastal route between Himarë and Dhërmi. The views are some of the best in the Mediterranean.

5. The Wild Nordic Isles: Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands feel like Europe’s best-kept secret. Halfway between Iceland and Norway, they offer raw cliffs, windswept villages and a sense of stillness that’s hard to find. For travellers seeking solitude and scenery, this is the place.

📍 Stay at: Havgrím Seaside Hotel 1948, Tórshavn

Built in 1948 as the private residence of Commodore Havgrímur Johannesen, this elegant seaside manor is now one of the Faroe Islands’ most exclusive boutique hotels. Its refined Nordic interiors, rich maritime heritage and sweeping views over the North Atlantic make it feel like a world away while staying within walking distance of Tórshavn’s cultural heart.

Travel tip: Pack layers and prepare for all seasons in a day. It’s all part of the adventure.
